Berkeley Court, on the coast outside of Bristol, has been owned by the Haverfords since at least the time of Henry VIII. In the nineteenth century, it is tenanted, but when travel was more difficult, the duke, his family, and his stewards found it useful to have a home close to Bristol, where they could oversee their mercantile interests. At the time, travel by sea was quicker and largely safer than travel by land, so many of the Haverford holdings are on or near the coast.
